The role of IUCN in the environmental world

—today and in the future

IUCN deserves to play an even more central role in today’s world than it does—it deserves to, and it must. As the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change unfold, the voice of IUCN must be heard in the places in which the decisions that will decide the future of our planet are being made: in policy circles and across the private sector.

Because of its history, membership, and global reach, no other environmental organization is in a better position to influence the dialogue about our responsibility to conserve nature and natural resources for future generations and the urgency of developing and implementing reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

In this process, the IUCN Council, with its international representation and concentration of expertise, plays a critical role in providing the oversight and setting the strategic direction for IUCN and, by extension, for much of the conservation movement.
